PRESS RELEASE

21 February 2007

WHAT THEATRE MAKERS REALLY, REALLY WANT

Theatre supporters are being asked to draw up a ‘wish list’ of facilities, initiatives and other projects that would help them in their theatre work across Waverley. Theatre makers and supporters – ranging from small amateur groups to larger professional companies, as well as audiences – are being approached as part of an assessment of their needs, which will ask what they really want and inform decision makers in the future when policy and provision for the arts is planned.

“We want to know what would make it easier for theatre makers to produce more of the type of theatre they want to make and that audiences want to see. We need to get the policy and priorities right by finding out what is wanted,” says Julie Maskery, Waverley's head of leisure services.

Ms Maskery continues: “Supporting theatre is not just about providing the bricks and mortar. Often it’s relatively small factors that hold back theatre companies. Some theatre makers have said that having somewhere to store costumes and making use of networking opportunities would help. Or it could be that a new website could help directors, writers and actors share ideas.”

A selection of theatre companies are being visited directly by Waverley to carry out individual audits of their needs and to look at how organisations operate in today’s theatre world. The audit asks questions such as: “Who makes up your audience?” and ”How do you decide what to perform?” However, the council is unable to visit all theatre companies, particularly some of the smaller ones, so Ms Maskery is encouraging supporters of theatre in the borough to write to Waverley with details of what they need.

Individuals and groups can email theatre@waverley.gov.uk with their ideas, or write to Charlotte Gardiner, Waverley Borough Council, Council Offices, The Burys, Godalming, GU7 1HR. The closing date is Monday 12 March. Suggestions should be as specific as possible and, if relevant, detail which theatre group or groups the suggestions relate to. Waverley cannot promise to respond to every comment but if contact details are included, they will try to keep interested parties up to date with developments.
